Everyone talks about fats and how they affect your health – good fats, bad fats, trans fats, saturated fats, mono- and poly-unsaturated, essential fatty acids and non-essential, omega-3, -6 and -9 … it can all be a bit confusing. So which fats do you need to be healthy? (And yes, you actually do need fats for good health.)
Trans fats: These are the worst kind of fat for your body. While some trans fats occur naturally in trace amounts in meat and dairy products, most are artificially created. By subjecting unsaturated fats to a process called hydrogenation, they’re turned into trans fats. This process is done to raise the fat’s melting point for use in baking and to extend the products’ shelf life. It used to be primarily used for margarines and shortenings.
Saturated fats: These are a very unhealthy type of fat that has been linked to heart disease. They’re called saturated fats because their structure is saturated with hydrogen atoms. This type of fat results in fatty materials building up on the artery walls.
